Welcome to the first issue of “135 Questions with..”!
Every so often we will bombard former camper, faculty or staff members with our pile 135 questions. We’ll edit down their responses and post them here, picking the best answers. We like to check in with each other every so often and thought you’d enjoy it as well. (btw, wanna make it 136? Let us know if you wanna add some questions and we’ll see what we can do…)
John Howrey was the TAP Musical Director for the first four years. He’s coming back this year and we thought we should catch up!
1. What is your full name?
John Philip Howrey
2. Where were you born?
Eastland, TX
12. What’s the first thing you remember about TAP?
Sitting in my kitchen with Ginger talking about this new summer camp she was thinking of starting.
14. What was the opening number of your first TAP showcase?
“Use What You Got” from The Life. Choreographed by Cory Cruser.
34. When was the last time you laughed really hard?
Watching Modern Family the other night.
62. What are you about to do?
I’ve got some design clients who need attention. But I may just watch TV.
71. Where’s the beef?
[Insert response from Michael Scott.]
75. Recommend a book/play/musical/poem/movie that has changed your life.
Stephen Sondheim’s Finishing the Hat. What terrific insight to his process. And an amazing guide to his work. It’s all I could think about when I was working on Sunfish. So much to learn from him.
82. Red Sox or Yankees?
I don’t watch tennis.
83. Tenors or baritones?
Baritones, definitely.
91. What’s the last piece of live performance you attended as an audience member?
DollHouse by Teresea Rebeck at New Rep.
96. What was your favorite TAP activity?
Anything that takes us down to the gorge.
99. Is there anyone with you right now?
My adorable Sweetpea! (See picture)
105. Who was/were your roommate/s at TAP?
One year I shared a room with Kevin Archambault. We had a great time. The first order of business was a trip to Target so we could decorate. A rug, some soft lighting… and we were set!
111. In winter, would you rather wear jackets or hoodies?
It gets rather cold in Boston, so I generally wear both.
120. What project are you working on currently?
I’m design the 2011 – 2012 season materials from Stoneham Theatre and am gearing up for a production of Bat Boy. After TAP I’ll be directing The Mystery of Edwin Drood with Stoneham Theatre’s Young Company.
131. With whom have you had the most successful professional collaboration?
Chris Carcione at Stoneham Theatre’s Young Company. We always have a great time, and the shows are spectacular. Doesn’t hurt that we’re working with some pretty amazing kids.
